Well, you probably read the short background statement on the home page. This will be a more detailed description of my approach and how we went about constructing our battle plan. I say WE as this is a family effort lead by my wonderful Wife. She is the 'research' and recipe guru that is central to this battle. Without her, I would be nothing!
Anyway, I have stated the diagnosis previously. Yep, Prostate Cancer, but it is relatively small, isolated to the prostate and caught in the early stages. The bad news is that it has a Gleason Score rating of 4 + 4 = 8. This indicates a relatively fast growing versions of cancer; just my luck!
No matter what your diagnosis or status, you have to Start with RESEARCH. Don't let anyone do it for you as this is a journey, not a destination! Part of the understanding and your comfort level with your decisions will be derived from this research. It is truly daunting, the amount and quality of information available is truly staggering! Involve your family and loved ones if possible. As I said my wife did so much research and funneled the most important stuff to me. I also did my own and shared it with her. I will compile a short list of the most important (to ME) in the 'Links' section of this web site.
Since standard allopathic medicine only gives you three choices (by law!), surgery, radiation, chemicals/chemotherapy, I decided that there HAD to be other choices. The side effects of the standard modalities were just too negative and almost worse than the cancer itself. After all, I am only 64 and plan to live into my 100's to see my Grandchildren's Children! The side effects and subsequent prognosis of these standard alternatives only was 5 years past treatment!
Yep, that is considered 'success' to the medical community. Living just 5 more years! Well bullshit to that! I'm not the only one who feels this way either! There are loads of sites, from 'Fuck Cancer' to many others on the Net. Yes, I just dropped the 'F-bomb' but what the hell! I have cancer so cut me some slack! Language and cussing has been a part of me for ever. Get over it!
There are literally ten's of thousands of sites dedicated to cancer, it's cure and treatment and just people hating the hand they have been dealt. U-Tube has ten's of thousands (yes really!) of short videos on the subject of cancer. There are 5,090 (today 7-7-2010) just on 'prostate cancer'.
Anyway, on with the approach....
My wife and I have been migrating towards a more healthy diet for several years. We ate less red meat, more chicken and even some lamb now and then (thanks to our lovely neighbors!). My research as yours will also reveal that this was NOT enough. Low and behold, we found that there were numerous 'Cancer Cure' sites; not five year survival, but cures! My doctors said nothing about that! And is all seems so simple!
Change your Lifestyle
Change your diet.
Cure your cancer!
Whoa, not so fast you say?
And right you should!
It ain’t quite that easy!
Think about it! Lifestyle and diet is something that has been YOU for your entire life. It consists of your family heritage, history and upbringing. Depending on country of origin and places you have lived, your lifestyle and diets has probably changed slightly over 10's of years. When they say "Change your lifestyle" and "Change your diet" they really mean CHANGE! Like in obliterate all previously held beliefs, food choices, desires and favorite fast foods.
It ain't easy!
You will see that on all the sites (that aren't totally wacko) the common threads seem to be:
Don't eat Meat - of any kind. Don't eat anything with a face!
Don't eat/drink milk or anything else from cows, goats, sheep, etc.
Some say don't eat fish. (does a fish have a 'face'?)
They ALL say:
Eat Whole Foods!
Eat Raw Foods!
Eat Organically Grown Foods!
So you have heard of Vegetarians? How about Vegans? Plant-Based? Frankly I always considered them Whaco's.
Now I AM ONE! - We live a strictly Whole Food Plant-Based Lifestyle!
See, I told you it wasn't easy, but what in life that is of value truly is 'easy'?
The following sections will detail more about how and why we got where we are today and where we seem to be heading. If nothing else, it has been an enlightening journey; one that continues as we expand our knowledge of things never taught to us or apparently to our doctors!
OK one more thing before we leave this page. The question of alkalinity vs. acidity in the body. There are loads of opinions on this, but the one pervasive one is that cancer and other disease cannot live in an alkaline body. Most believe that the internal pH of the human body is one of the key factors in maintaining organic balance.
The scale that is used for measuring the pH, or hydrogen ion concentration … is from 0 to 14, with 7 being the neutral point. Thus, an Alkaline Body pH means that the pH of the blood is above 7 with the ideal pH being 7.35. Outside of this range … the body activity is no longer optimal and the metabolism is out of balance.
The pH of the body is influenced by metabolic sub-products and our diet. Thus, pH is directly affected by the various categories of food that we eat and the internal mechanisms involved in their processing. Some foods that are acid in their composition can become alkalinizing following metabolization, e.g. lemons. Accordingly, it is to become more consciously aware of the impact that various food groups and our eating habits have on the internal environment of the body.
Now, how the hell do you tell if you are alkaline or acidic? Easy, if you have a pool. Use the test strip to test your pool water; yep, just pee on it or in a cup and dip the test strip. You can also just spit on it but supposedly the urine is a better indicator of total body PH. As an alternative, health-food stores (Whole Foods Market for one) sell PH test strips. Maybe it is the raw diet and the rest (see next page); just not sure. I wish I had tested myself before starting all this change of lifestyle and diet. Oh well, it is a good thing so far.
Do your own research. I personally would be wary of sites that sell a lot of products, water treatment systems and such. This can be expensive. We are fortunate in that we purchased a whole house water treatment (carbon filtration) and water softener some years ago. Our water in the house tests at 7.5; which is good if you believe the 'experts'.
I have heard that reverse osmosis is good but removes all the minerals. Reverse osmosis, also, by removing alkaline mineral constituents of water, produces acidic water. Acidic water can be dangerous to the body system, causing calcium and other essential minerals to be stripped from bones and teeth in order to neutralize its acidity.
